New fire station @ Caffin/N. Derbigny?

The Lower Ninth Ward has been without a fire station since Katrina – but that may be about to change, as the yesterday's Times-Picayune reported:
"The Lower 9th Ward, without a fire station since Hurricane Katrina flooded the Engine 22 and Engine 39 stations, will get a new, combined firehouse under a plan approved recently by the City Planning Commission.

The commission endorsed the city's plan to buy an entire block bounded by Caffin Avenue and North Derbigny, Flood and North Roman streets. The block would house a two-story fire station and other city facilities.

District Fire Chief Tim McConnell said the site's location would allow firefighters to respond in less than four minutes to calls from anywhere in the Lower 9th Ward, a section cut off from the rest of the city by the Industrial Canal. He said the station would combine the engines housed at the two former stations."
