Nothing like some fresh herbs, vegetables, bread and other baked goods to go along with that gumbo you're cooking up! Sunday was another step forward for the community with the opening of the first Lower Ninth Ward Farmers Market.
On display was fresh organic produce from George Lafarge's Farm in Plaquemines Parish: delicious creole tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers and white squash. Another vendor was the Monroe Street Bakery, offering cinnamon rolls, pecan pies, apple pies, sweet potato pies, italian bread and pistollettes. Also for sale was fresh produce from Holy Cross's own community garden, the Laurentine Ernst Community Garden at Forstall and Chartres, which included collard greens, mustard greens, mint, sage and green onions.
The new Lower Ninth Ward Farmers Market, a member of the Downtown Neighborhood Market Consortium, is held every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of St. David's Church on St. Claude Avenue. Holy Cross resident Jenga Mwendo is the Market Manager. Thanks for making the market happen, Jenga!
