Thanks to Sarah DeBacher of Holy Cross, this report from last Saturday’s neighborhood cleanup of the Holy Cross community garden at Chartres and Forstall:
“Jenga Mwendo and Patsy Story of the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association organized the cleanup, and several residents pitched in to clean up the weeds that had take over the garden. Also helping out were Gina, my husband Simon, Craig of the Alliance for Affordable Energy and several ‘kid supervisors.’ Underneath it all, we discovered thriving herbs, healthy 'ghostbuster' eggplants, cucumbers, and a few choice grape tomatoes. We hope it WILL be a more welcoming place!”
And Jenga writes:
"Right now, the plan is to till the soil and replant the garden. We will recruit neighbors to tend the garden regularly. It needs watering and light weeding daily. We're going to grow aloe plants (or other low-maintenance plants) in the land right next to the curb and cover the space in between the aloe plants with gravel. And give the garden's sign a fresh coat of paint. We are considering planting flowers and vegetables, like mirliton, that can be sold at the Upper Ninth Ward Farmer's Market."
Neighbors who are interested in helping out should contact Jenga.
